Food for human consumption
The majority of Carmeuse products, in the form of calcium oxide carbonate or calcium hydroxide carbonate, can be found throughout the food industry: as a carrier (chewing gum, confectionery, toothpaste),
for treatment of drinking water, for making beer, milk powder for babies, confectionery, yoghurt, soft drinks, ice cream, cheese and preservatives (absorption of CO2 for preserving fruit), etc.

Carmeuse has developed lime for the most exacting requirements: Ledacal®, a virtually pure product with a very low heavy metal content, and complying with the strictest requirements of the Pharmacopea or the "Food Chemical Codex". |
Sugar Refining
The sugar refining industry consumes large quantities of lime for precipitating the mineral or organic impurities that are mixed in with the sugar in the liquid extracted from the beet.
To avoid filtration problems, it needs to use lime or calcium carbonate with a low silica and magnesium content. Carmeuse supplies many of the largest sugar manufacturers.

Fighting acidity in soils by spreading lime on soils to improve their fertility. Basic soil conditioners with calcium and magnesium improve the physical, chemical and biological fefrtility of soils. |
Animal feeds
Limestone with a high calcium content and containing low amounts of insoluble hydrochloric compounds is an essential component for feeds for poultry, pigs and cattle, to strengthen egg-shells and avoid bone decalcification.
In grazing land and livestock sheds, lime is used as a disinfectant and prophylactic.
